Governor Greg Abbott signed "Alyssa's Law," aimed at enhancing emergency response times in schools to help save students' lives.
“On February 14th I texted Alyssa. I told her to run and hide and help was on the way,” said Lori Alhadeff, the mother of a 14-year-old Florida freshman.
But help did not arrive in time. Fear and confusion delayed the response, leading to a tragic outcome. Seventeen students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, lost their lives to a gunman.
Since the Valentine’s Day mass shooting in 2018, Alhadeff has been advocating for a change she believes could have saved her daughter’s life. "Alyssa’s Law" now mandates that Texas schools install panic button alert systems.
